This fellowship is designed for Indian students registered for a Ph.D. in an Indian University. The applicant is registered in a US institute for his/her grant. Once selected, students receive visa support, monthly stipend, round trip economy class travel, and affiliation fees.

This grant is for Ph.D. students to conduct research essential to their dissertations/thesis. Therefore, the expected Ph.D. thesis submission date should at least be three months after the Fulbright-Nehru grant end date. Applicants with Ph.D. degrees or those at the final stage of Ph.D. thesis submission are not considered.

6 to 9 months

Subjects in which fellowship is given

Agricultural Sciences; Anthropology; Bioengineering; Chemistry; Computer Science; Economics; Education Policy and Planning; Energy Studies; Geography; History; Language and Literature; Materials Science (with emphasis on environmental applications); Mathematical Sciences; Neuroscience; Performing Arts; Physics; Political Science (including, but not limited to, International Security and Strategic Studies); Public Health; Public Policy; Sociology; Urban and Regional Planning (with emphasis on smart cities and waste management); Visual Arts; and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Eligibility criteria and requirements

  • Applicant must be registered for Ph.D. at an Indian institution on or before November 2, 2020.
  • Recommendation letter from the Ph.D. supervisor must be submitted that comments on applicants’ research, need for the fellowship, and must indicate the Ph.D. registration date and topic;

Application date and Procedure

The application starts in the month of July and shortlisted candidates are interviewed by the end of September. USIEF notifies principal and alternate nominees. Nominees take TOEFL. Then USIEF forwards applications of recommended candidates to the U.S. for J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB) approval and placement by November. Finalists are notified in April next year and the program starts by September. Thus the whole procedure takes almost one year.
