Many a times while compiling LaTeX files, we come across compilation errors like ‘_________.sty’ not found. In order to deal with such types of error, we need to understand beforehand what these errors signify? What is this object named _____.sty?

What is .sty?

.sty object that appears in LaTeX compilation errors is actually files with .sty extension. These are style files, often called as packages and are supplementary file that are used to increase the functionality of the TeX documents. These files contain all the definitions and descriptions of styling attributes to be implemented in a particular LaTeX document. The name of the file before the .sty extension denotes the package it is referring to. So in case of crop.sty, this is a style file for the package crop.

‘Crop.sty’ not found

Let’s say while compiling your TeX program, an error flash in the console saying ‘crop.sty’ not found. This means TeX is unable to find this style file. What you have to do now is go to website CTAN and search for the package ‘crop’. Download the entire zip file in a separate folder and unzip it.

You will find several files in it. Now open the editor you are using for editing TeX files. Browse crop.ins file in it and just compile it. .ins files are installation files and their compilation results in the creation of style file. Now you can copy the generated file in the folder containing your original TeX file that you were compiling before. Try again compiling it…to your surprise..error will be gone!!
