TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme Details

The TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowships are tenable for a maximum duration of four years in various CSIR research laboratories and institutes across India. Successful applicants have the option to enroll for a PhD degree in their home country or in an Indian university. The fellowship is available in the following fields: Agricultural Sciences, Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biological Systems and Organisms, Medical and Health Sciences (including Neurosciences), Chemical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics.

TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year.
  2. National of a developing country (excluding India).
  3. Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country.
  4. Hold a Master’s degree in science and technology.
  5. Employed in their home country and engaged in research activities.
  6. For Sandwich Fellowships (registered PhD students in their home country):
    • Provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the home university.
  7. For Full-Time Fellowships (not registered for a PhD):
    • Be willing to register at a university in India within the first year, if agreed to by CSIR.
  8. Accepted at a CSIR laboratory/institution and provide an official acceptance letter from the host institution.
  9. Proficiency in English, if the medium of education was not English.
  10. Demonstrate the intent to return to their home country upon completion of the fellowship.
  11. Commitment to solely focus on the fellowship without taking up other assignments.
  12. Financial responsibility for any accompanying family members.

TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme Application Process

Applications for the TWAS-CSIR Postgraduate Fellowship Programme must be submitted online via the TWAS online portal during the open call period. It is recommended to apply for a preliminary acceptance letter from the chosen CSIR host institution before the opening date of the call. The acceptance letter should be included in the application. The deadline for submission is 15 September 2023. Please note that applicants can apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio.
